The Bismarck Marathon is more than just a race; it’s a platform where inspiring stories unfold.
In the midst of the countless footsteps pounding the pavement, a unique wave of pink stood out at the 2023 SCHEELS 5K event. The BIO Girls, a remarkable non-profit organization, took center stage, leaving a lasting impression and evoking curiosity.
Introducing Our Motivational Spotlight Series
Every runner’s journey matters at the Bismarck Marathon. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our Motivational Spotlight Series presented by Dakota Community Bank & Trust. In this series, we aim to shine a light on the incredible stories of some of our marathon participants.
BIO Girls: Fostering Self-Esteem and More
BIO Girls, a non-profit organization with six sites across North Dakota, is on a mission to empower girls aged 7-14. Their 12-week mentorship program is designed to nurture self-esteem, self-worth, and personal growth, using a curriculum rooted in research and evidence. The program revolves around four core pillars:
- Mental Wellness
- Healthy Relationships
- Leadership
- Kindness
The culmination of this program is nothing short of extraordinary. In September, all six BIO Girls sites come together to participate in the Bismarck Marathon, making it their grand finale event.
A Unique Alignment with the Bismarck Marathon
Brandy, the Bismarck BIO Girls Site Director, explains the significance of this unique alignment.
“I chose to end our program with the Bismarck Marathon because of the incredible experience and energy it offers. It sets the perfect tone for the girls to not only achieve their goal but also support each other throughout the journey.”
At the 2023 Bismarck Marathon, an impressive contingent of 80 BIO Girls joined forces with their dedicated 20 mentors. These mentors had not only spent the last 12 weeks physically training the girls but also mentally preparing them to conquer the challenge of completing a 5K.
Beyond Running: The Power of Goal Setting
During the 12-week program, the BIO Girls are taught a valuable lesson: it’s not about being the fastest or better than others. Instead, the focus is on setting goals and achieving something they might not have believed possible. Brandy elaborates, “This leaves our girls thinking and feeling, ‘I’ve worked hard, and look what I’m able to achieve.'”
The spirit of “no one gets left behind” echoed resoundingly as participants who had already crossed the finish line went back to support and complete the race alongside their fellow group members.
A Triumph of Determination
Congratulations to the 80 girls who triumphantly crossed the finish line at the 2023 Bismarck Marathon presented by MDU Resources. Their dedication, determination, and unity showcased the incredible power of mentorship and teamwork.
